We loved the location as it was our second location in Miami beach. First we stayed a bit more to the north where we were more in the middle of the action and then we moved to this hotel which is in a more quiet area of south beach. The mix was perfect for us.Very pretty lobby with complementary water and good coffee in the morning.

43 Common Houseplants For Any Home or Apartment

house plant varieties

They feature small green fleshy leaves that are carried by thick woody stems. Arrowhead vine (Syngonium podophyllum) gets its name from the triangular shape of its green leaves. You can find varieties with variegated leaves or even bronzy-green with pink tones (you might also see it sold as Nepthytis). Young plants form a mound about a foot high, but stems begin to vine as they mature, so you can grow them upright if you give them support or let them trail in a hanging basket. The interesting shape of the leaves and trailing stems give any room a tropical feel.

Heart-leaf philodendron

Just place your fern on a pebble tray or mist it occasionally and you should have a charming houseplant for years to come. With flowers that come in a range of colors, including red, purple, black, orange, pink and blue, anthurium’s glossy leaves also add to their appeal. Despite their exotic look, these low maintenance plants adapt easily to all sorts of lighting, including low lighting; however, plants may produce fewer flowers in inadequate lighting.

Rubber Tree

Ivy's trailing behavior makes it a perfect choice for a hanging plant—and the plant will grow fast under indoor conditions. It can do well in low light conditions, so you can have it brighten up a darker corner. This pretty flowering houseplant has been a time-honored favorite, due to its sweet purple blooms that appear several times a year. The African violet needs light, warmth, and plenty of humidity to thrive. Weeping figs are grown as dwarf trees when kept indoors, although they can reach 60’ in height in nature. These evergreen perennials are known for their glossy, ovoid leaves and occasionally are sold with braided trunks for added visual interest.

Strict new EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down

Plus, it adapts well to low-light spots and doesn’t mind if you forget to water it a time or two. Its trailing stems look especially pretty draping down from a shelf or hanging basket. Aloe vera thrives on neglect—in fact, the biggest mistake you can make with this succulent is overwatering, which will cause its leaves to droop. Its leaves come in various sizes and shapes, and are decorated with white spots and edged with small whitish teeth. The plants look striking on their own or in an indoor vignette with other rounded-edge succulents. Aloe Vera are common houseplants that have many potential health benefits.

Place it near (but not in) a window that faces south or east, to give them the bright, indirect light they crave. These super easy-care succulents originally hail from eastern Africa but have evolved to handle a wide range of conditions, including low light. ZZ plants also prefer infrequent waterings, ideally every month or less, so they are a great choice for gardeners with a more “hands-of” approach. Also known as the “pancake plant” or “Chinese money plant,” UFO plants are popular, easy-care specimens that feature glossy, fleshy leaves in a characteristic circular shape. As houseplants, these plants rarely grow above 4’ tall and are often kept as bonsais due to their treelike forms. Preferring moderate to high humidity levels, place your plant near a humidifier or on a pebble tray to prevent crispy leaves and leaf drop.

Easy Houseplants That Deserve A Spot In Your Living Room Or Office

In the right environment, air plants are extremely difficult to kill, but setting up that environment takes a little practice. These plants grow fast, so they’re ideal if you want to fill a lot of space. Most household varieties grow to about two feet, but some specific varieties can reach fifteen feet instead.

Rubber plant (Ficus elastica) is a large, tree-like houseplant with glossy, oval leaves that can be green, bronze, or variegated. "This old-fashioned houseplant has stood the test of time," says Bunting. "Tolerating a variety of light conditions makes the rubber plant a tough and adaptable houseplant." Another type of philodendron, heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) has beautiful glossy leaves that bring beauty to any home.

Rubber plants, Ficus elastica, are easy evergreens to grow with glossy leaves and a stunning architectural growth habit. There are several cultivars to choose from, such as the variegated 'Tineke', or 'Bali', which has deep green-purple leaves. Others include the fiddle leaf fig, Ficus benghalensis and Ficus benjamina. Brush up on how to care for your house plant, as all have slightly different needs. For example, indoor plants are often killed by overwatering. As a rule of thumb, water only when the top 1-2cm of compost is dry.

Spider Plant

One of the easiest palms to grow inside, fishtail palms generally grow to about 6’ in height when mature. Like other palms, if you notice your fishtail’s leaves beginning to turn brown, assess your plant’s moisture levels and consider adding a humidifier or pebble tray to your setup. Also known as the “felt bush,” this drought-tolerant plant requires minimal watering. Allow your plant’s soil to thoroughly dry out between waterings and, when you water, give your kalanchoe a good, deep drink. Coming in both solid green and variegated varieties, Chinese evergreen plants are super low maintenance, but they pack a punch.

A favorite over the winter holiday season, Christmas cactuses (Schlumbergera x buckleyi) develop gorgeous blooms in colors of mauve, orange, pink, red, white, and yellow. Many types of jasmine make wonderful houseplants that are fast-growing and low-maintenance, and Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is one of the best for a brightly lit location. Great for beginner gardeners, spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are known for being low maintenance. "Naturally decorative, spider plants have thin, gracefully arching leaves that produce a lovely fountain effect," says Kelly Funk, president of Jackson & Perkins. "Since spider plants require little care and can tolerate artificial light very well, they're an excellent choice for offices and homes." Ideal for narrow windowsills, the slow-growing succulent remains neat and compact.

Calathea is a relatively easy-to-raise plant, with distinctive light and dark sections on its many leaves. These leaves tend to fall down in layers, creating a dense appearance and blocking sight. They particularly like moist soil, often to the point of daily watering in warmer weather, and do well in both low and moderate light. Jasmine plants offer beautiful, fragrant flowers that make them desirable houseplants—and some varieties are vines and make gorgeous hanging plants. These big and beautiful palm trees (also known as the butterfly palm or the bamboo palm) make a statement in your room, growing up to 8 feet tall. One of the stars of the past few years, the monstera (or Swiss cheese plant) is beloved for its pretty leaves.

Different plants have varying light needs, from low light to bright indirect light. Make sure to choose a plant that will thrive in the level of light available in your space. Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant has large, light green leaves with slender, waxy, and dark foliage.

It’s toxic to cats and dogs, so keep them safe by placing your lucky bamboo out of reach. Since 2003, she has covered home design, gardening, parenting, houseplants, even youth sports. While most succulents don’t like being inside due to their airflow needs, some will rally in a sunny spot. Annette Gutierrez of Potted recommends kalanchoes, euphorbias, gasteria and aloes. “Oddly, except for kalanchoes and euphorbias, these would all burn if they were in full sun outside,” Gutierrez said.

Keeping your plant in a smaller pot will also curb its growth. Cast iron plants are extremely slow growing and can take years to reach their full height. Cast iron plants are almost impervious to neglect and aptly named for their tough-as-nails constitution. A good choice for dimly lit rooms and rooms with northern exposure. Peace lilies are also highly tolerant to drought, and you only need to check them once a week or so. They also benefit from gently washing their leaves once a year or so, which helps remove dust.

Anyone who has killed a popular houseplant knows keeping greenery alive isn’t easy. We fellow plant killers tend to agree, which is why we opt for low-light indoor plants. Low light doesn’t always translate to low maintenance because, let’s face it, there are a lot of other factors that go into plant survival, but sunlight is a biggie. So if you want to stock your space with houseplants but don’t know where to start, let us help.

So find that old macramé plant hanger and run out to your local nursery to purchase one of these common indoor plants that don't require a lot of fuss. When grown indoors, they have a controlled height of 2 to 10 inches. You would need bright but indirect sunlight for the exotic plant. But they are best grown in areas of bright but filtered sunlight. This low-maintenance houseplant is commonly called devil’s ivy or pothos (Epipremnum aureum) It’s not fussy about how much light it gets, but yes, it does need some. And if you forget to water it for a while, it will quickly rebound when you do give it a drink.

There's never been a better time to adopt a plant, and you can find them at your local nursery or shop for them online. Velvet plants root easily in water, so try propagating some cuttings after pruning your plant. As velvet plants are relatively short-lived, living only two to three years, you can keep your plants going indefinitely by continuously rooting cuttings. A tropical tree from the wetlands of Central and South America, money trees are believed to be lucky and are often given as housewarming gifts. A member of the mulberry family, this flowering plant is also known as the “climbing fig” for its ability to crawl up vertical surfaces.

Houseplants Perfect For College Dorm Rooms

Madagascar Dragon Tree – Dracaena MarginataMost definitely one of the easiest indoor plants to grow and maintain. Fiddle leaf fig, Ficus lyrata, is a pricey plant that can be a little fickle – it has a habit of dropping its leaves if it’s not happy. This could be due to dry air, under- or overwatering, under- or over feeding, or sudden changes in temperature.

Houseplants That Thrive in Direct Sun

Able to thrive even under poor conditions, this resilient plant will bloom on occasion with clusters of strongly fragrant blooms. Although these plants have simple care requirements, they do tend to attract pests, like spider mites and scale, so be sure to inspect your plant on occasion. Cast iron plants, as the name implies, are known for being incredibly hardy, adaptable plants that can grow well in almost any situation, including rooms with low light. The Biden rule comes nearly a decade after former President Barack Obama first tried to set limits on carbon pollution from U.S. power plants. His 2015 Clean Power Plan was blocked by the Supreme Court and later rolled back by Trump.

Best Wasp Repellent Plants

Native to Madagascar, elephant ear kalanchoe has soft, silvery leaves with serrated edges that are, at times, slightly folded, like an elephant’s ear. Also known as the “crispy wave” fern, bird’s nest ferns are known for their vibrant green, smooth leaves with wavy edges. When properly maintained, amaryllis can live for 25 or more years and generally improves with age, producing more blooms as it grows older.

"The ZZ plant has become very popular in the last five to 10 years," says Bunting. "It has a very different appearance from most plants and is very durable too." A charming little foliage plant with cheery pink speckles over deep-green leaves. In addition to pink, cultivars sporting white or red dots are also available. Pinch back the stems of too tall or leggy plants to encourage bushier growth.

Fiddle leaf fig is a popular houseplant since it can thrive in both bright and low light conditions. For these reasons, it’s often used as an ornamental plant in public spaces such as shopping malls and airports. The heartleaf philodendron is a popular choice for indoor plants since it's very tolerant of low light conditions. The plant can also tolerate periods of drought, making it an ideal choice for those who do not want to worry about watering their plants regularly. Pothos is one of the most popular low-light houseplants that is also a great option to clean indoor air.

This is a popular and easy-to-grow houseplant known for its long, arching leaves with green and white variegation. One of its distinctive features is the production of baby plants, or “spiderettes,” which dangle from the mother plant on long, slender stems, resembling spiders on a web. As an indoor plant, the parlor palm requires relatively little care and can thrive in a variety of conditions. It is an excellent choice for people who want a low-maintenance houseplant that doesn't require a lot of sunlight or water. This plant is native to tropical regions of South America and is often used as a houseplant. The heartleaf philodendron is a low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for and does not require much light or water.

Philodendron

The trailing stems of hoya have clusters of aromatic waxy flowers. The plant is famous for its deep green, long-living, vining foliage and pink or red flowers. String of Pearls is a low-maintenance creeper and does well in a sunny light position. This common houseplant also blooms in summer, producing fragrant flowers.

Australia Umbrella Tree

The most common houseplants are known for being low maintenance, tolerant of a range of growing conditions, and beautiful to look at. Also called mother-in-law's tongue, this hardy houseplant is almost impossible to kill. Although it prefers bright light, it will also persevere through dim lighting, temperature fluctuations, and lapses in watering. Tolerates low light, but will grow faster in medium to bright light. As their native habitat implies, they don’t need much water, so you can wait until at least the top third of their soil dries out before you water them again. They also prefer bright and full sunlight, so you can put them in areas that will scorch more light-sensitive plants.

Fiddle-leaf figs instantly give any room a jungle-like vibe. They grow very slowly, but can eventually reach the ceiling. With a reputation for being finicky, this cold-sensitive rainforest native needs just the right conditions to thrive indoors. Prefers east-facing, sunny windows; unobstructed late day sun in a west- or south-facing window may burn the leaves.

The Lithops fulleri is a living stones plant displaying green grayish foliage and mottled markings at the top. One of the ficus greats with large glossy oval shaped leaves. This Calathea has a clump forming habit and displays the most striking leaves with purplish colored backs. The couple had a 75th "birthday party" in 2014 for the home, in which they recounted its history to family and close friends. However, the space was awkwardly designed around the chimney for the living room fireplace. And the primary bedroom had a hidden room behind it built for nursing. Over the years, the Gorlins repurposed rooms to cater to their family's needs. In the basement, the brewing family, perhaps not surprisingly, built a bar with a serving window and tap. When the Gorlins were raising their three children in the home, they turned the taproom into a play space that their kids called the Pioneer Room because of the Lincoln log-like walls.

While they outfitted the bathroom with a new deep-bellied white standing bathtub and the primary bedroom with a contemporary wallpaper pattern, those and other design details keep with the home's old New England aesthetic. Over the winter, the Gorlins finished their biggest project yet — redesigning the primary bedroom and bathroom. They were careful to restore authentic details, such as bringing back to life the home's original oak floors hidden under off-white carpet. After Congress finally does pass new funding, this is how the US can rush weapons to Ukraine

do we have a speaker of the house yet

The Historical Society of Southern California is now headquartered here, and it holds several Sunday afternoon programs a year, as well as an annual holiday open house in December. As a result, Army leaders recently told Congress that without passage of the foreign aid bill, they will begin to run out of money and have to move funds from other accounts. The presidential drawdown authority, or PDA, as it’s known, has allowed the military to send billions of dollars worth of ammunition, air defense missile launchers, tanks, vehicles and other equipment to Ukraine. As a result, the Pentagon’s frequent aid packages for Ukraine dried up because there’s been no guarantee Congress would pass the additional funding needed to replenish the weapons the U.S. has been sending to Ukraine. The legislation would include more than $20 billion to restock the Pentagon’s shelves and ensure that the military services have what they need to fight and protect America.

Speaker of the House vote: Who voted against Jim Jordan? What's next?

Johnson received an "F" grade from Republicans for Ukraine on its GOP Congressional Report Card. Johnson did vote for the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022. "We'll be talking about the support and what's necessary to get it," Johnson said.

They refused to certify that President Biden was the rightful winner. They spread lies that helped ignite a mob of Trump supporters to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. WASHINGTON — The House was in an uproar, unable to settle on its new speaker, forcing roll call vote after roll call vote. The Senate had quietly slipped out of the city while insurgents in the House demanded more power as the nation watched anxiously.

Republicans Nominate Louisiana’s Mike Johnson for House Speaker

This time around, the Georgia Republican has the support of at least two other House Republicans, Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Paul Gosar, R-Ariz. Gaetz told theGrio he is worried some of his “Republican colleagues would vote for Jeffries” to be Johnson’s successor in the event far-right Republican lawmakers make good on their threat to vacate him from the speakership. Told theGrio he is concerned that a few House Republicans may vote to replace House Speaker Mike Johnson with Jeffries, the House minority leader.

Rep. Mike Johnson wins GOP nomination for speaker

The Senate and the White House are still controlled by Democrats and any spending bill passed will need Democratic support to become law and avert a shutdown. But what you hear from conservatives – at least in the minutes before and after Johnson won the speaker’s election – is they are willing to give some room for Johnson to maneuver in his new role. After three weeks without a speaker, the House voted Wednesday to elect Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana. The former president noted that all of them have supported him "in both mind and spirit" since he won the White House in 2016 and said the five candidates "are beyond reproach and represent the absolute best there is in the Republican Party."

There’s Still No House Speaker. What Happens Now?

Friday night, Mr. McCarthy remained one vote short of what he needed to seal the deal. Representative-elect Eli Crane of Arizona and Representative Matt Rosendale of Montana — the two holdouts who seemed most likely to move — both voted against him, leaving his fate in the hands of his lead tormentor, Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida. The floor fight dragged on for the better part of a week, the longest since 1859, and paralyzed the House, with lawmakers stripped of their security clearances because they could not be sworn in as official members of Congress until a speaker was chosen. Despite the divisions on display, Mr. McCarthy also emphasized the theme of unity in a speech after taking the speaker’s gavel, pledging open debate and an open door to both Republicans and Democrats.

Do we have a new speaker of the House? Will Republicans make picks?.

Each Saturday, students in Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture program lead half-hour tours. A small minority of the conference "took the wheels off our car and we need to be acting right now on Israel,” Bacon told CNN. “They don't support the institution. They don't support our party. All these folks care about is media clicks." Rep. Patrick McHenry, who became speaker pro tempore, opened up the conference meeting urging unity and kindness, according to members exiting the meeting.

House Republicans chose and then quickly repudiated yet another of their nominees for speaker on Tuesday and rushed to name a fourth, pressing to put an end to a remarkable three-week-long deadlock that has left Congress leaderless and paralyzed. On Wednesday, Mr. Johnson was toiling to help Republicans turn the page from the chaos of the past few weeks. He said there would be none of the typical celebrations that accompany the election of a new speaker. Mr. Johnson was only able to emerge as his party’s nominee for speaker this week after three other G.O.P. nominees before him were unable to rally enough support. The podcasts, spanning 69 episodes, offer an extended window into Mr. Johnson's views and politics, as he co-hosts the program with his wife, a licensed pastoral counselor. In it, the man who has just been elected speaker, an evangelical Christian, talks at length about his vehement opposition to abortion rights, calls the Democratic agenda socialist, and rails against the prosecution of Mr. Trump for his efforts to interfere in the 2020 election.

Is there a speaker of the House yet? Nope. And we can't get enough of McCarthy's failure

Mr. Crane, an incoming freshman, doesn’t have any track record as a player in Washington so it’s hard to discern what he may want, and he hasn’t articulated any particular asks. They are the last remaining six Republican holdouts who in the last round voted against Mr. McCarthy. As the vote-casting began, a few people packed their bags, closed out their tabs and left. “The empty chair is such poetry,” one onlooker said before the vote, pointing at the screen. A bartender switched the channel from basketball to C-SPAN about 10 minutes before the vote was set to start, but it was only when the session was called to order that the rowdy crowd turned its attention fully to the screens, hooting and clapping.

Representative Mike Gallagher, a Wisconsin Republican, is set to resign at the end of Friday, leaving Republicans with only a 4-seat majority of 217 to 213 Democrats. In 1989 Speaker Jim Wright of Texas resigned under pressure following revelations about a book deal the House Ethics Committee saw as circumventing fundraising rules. Wright had only been in the job a little over two years at the time.

Jeffries on Sunday warned during an interview with "Meet the Press" that Democrats "have not identified any candidate on the other side of the aisle," they would support in a speaker vote. It's just a formal endorsement, and as they head to the House for an official vote, they're allowed to nominate other candidates. They can also switch their votes if they previously supported Jordan but changed their minds. Jordan entered the House in 2007 as a conservative bomb-thrower who was a thorn in the sides of GOP leadership.

The four absences mean Johnson will need 215 votes to win the speakership if all members in the chamber vote for a candidate. "Therefore, the Honorable Mike Johnson of the state of Louisiana, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress," McHenry, the interim speaker, announced after reading the final vote tally. Johnson now faces a daunting list of challenges, with a fast-approaching government shutdown chief among them. The House is staring down a deadline of Nov. 17, when current government funding expires.

Left unmentioned was that many of the same rebels who helped lead the effort in Congress to overturn the 2020 election, giving rise to the assault that day, were also among the final holdouts working to block Mr. McCarthy’s ascent. The prolonged election prompted tension and uncertainty in the Capitol, where lawmakers in both parties had grown impatient and bored awaiting the outcome of a high-stakes struggle that seemed at once monumental and absurd. Instead, he waited until the end of the roll call to vote “present.” Republicans cheered, but it was not enough. Jordan last week defeated Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., for the GOP speaker nomination.

Deputy Whip Rep. Patrick McHenry (R- North Carolina) is now acting Speaker Pro Tempore until a vote is held for who will succeed McCarthy. According to House rules, McHenry was picked from a list McCarthy was required to keep of people to take his place. On Wednesday, Republican holdouts once again blocked Jordan's grab for the gavel. Out of the 221 House Republicans, 22 did not vote for the Ohio lawmaker. Jordan has made quite a name for himself since joining the house, mainly by being a member of the ultra-right Freedom Caucus and being a thorn in GOP leadership's side.
